About the program

K2 Trek and Gondogoro La Over 24 days, we trek along the Baltoro Glacier to Concordia and the base camps of Broad Peak and K2, then cross Gondogoro La at 5,585 m and descend into the Hushe Valley. The first part of the route winds through moraines, glaciers and the immense walls of the Karakoram. At Concordia, glaciers meet beneath towering eight-thousanders. From here, we approach the foot of K2 to see the mountain up close and appreciate its scale. Beyond Gondogoro La, the scenery changes. As we descend past Laila Peak and Chogolisa, ice gradually gives way to streams, green slopes and mountain villages. This transition from high-altitude camps to the Hushe Valley makes the journey especially varied. On the trek, a local team sets up camp, prepares meals and carries the main luggage; participants walk with daypacks. The route is nevertheless demanding: many days of trekking, high altitude and technical sections on the pass require good preparation. Crossing the pass depends on the weather and route conditions. The guide may adjust the plan to suit conditions and participants' wellbeing. Safety takes priority over the schedule.

Route by day

Day 1

Arrival in Islamabad

We meet at the airport and transfer to the hotel. After the journey, there is time to rest and get to know the team. A long adventure lies ahead, so there is no rush today: we unpack, discuss the route and prepare for the domestic flight. Please arrive by 13:00 local time. Airport meeting details will be confirmed.

Day 1Route day5-star hotel in Islamabad, twin sharingAccommodation typeBreakfastIncluded meals

Day 2

Flight to Skardu

We fly to Skardu, the starting point for our journey into the mountains. In clear weather, we may see peaks of the Himalayas and Karakoram, including Nanga Parbat. Transfer to the hotel and rest. An early arrival leaves time to explore the town and local bazaar. If the flight is canceled, we travel to Skardu by road at no extra charge. In that case, the itinerary for the first few days may change.

Day 2Route day4-star hotel in SkarduAccommodation type2230 mMax altitude for the dayBreakfastIncluded meals

Day 3

Skardu: acclimatization and preparation

A day without a long transfer. The program includes a walk to Kharpocho Fort; the rest of the time is devoted to equipment checks and preparations for departure. We repack our duffel bags, rent any missing equipment, set aside items for our daypacks and address questions best resolved before the trek begins.

Day 3Route day4-star hotel in SkarduAccommodation type2230 mMax altitude for the dayBreakfastIncluded meals

Day 4

Drive from Skardu to Askole

We travel by 4WD to Askole through the Shigar and Braldu valleys. The drive becomes part of the journey, with settlements, mountain slopes and apricot trees laden with juicy fruit passing outside the windows as familiar infrastructure becomes increasingly scarce. In the evening, we spend our first night in tents and get to know the trekking routine. Travel time: approximately 5–7 hours.

Day 4Route dayTent camp in AskoleAccommodation type3000 mMax altitude for the dayBreakfast, lunch and dinnerIncluded meals

Day 5

Askole to Jhola

The walking portion of the route begins. From Askole, we head toward Jhola through the Korophon area, near the Biafo Glacier. We gradually settle into walking and find a steady, unhurried pace, with many trekking days ahead. Along the way, we check that our packs fit comfortably. Travel time: 5–8 hours.

Day 5Route dayJhola tent camp, approximately 3,100–3,160 mAccommodation type20 kmRoute distanceBreakfast, lunch and dinnerIncluded meals

Day 6

Jhola to Paiyu

We continue toward Paiyu. Today is a long trekking day, so we walk at a steady pace and conserve energy for the stages ahead. In the evening, we rest at camp and have dinner with the team. Travel time: 7–8 hours.

Day 6Route dayPaiyu tent camp, approximately 3,400–3,450 mAccommodation type20.5 kmRoute distanceBreakfast, lunch and dinnerIncluded meals

Day 7Route dayPaiyu tent camp, approximately 3,400–3,450 mAccommodation typeBreakfast, lunch and dinnerIncluded meals

Day 8

Paiyu to Khoburse

We step onto the Baltoro Glacier. In good weather, views of the Trango Towers and Uli Biaho accompany us. Underfoot, this is no longer an even walking trail, and we must divide our attention between the terrain and the surrounding mountains. We walk with the guide and gradually become familiar with glacier terrain. Travel time: 5–6 hours.

Day 8Route dayKhoburse tent campAccommodation type3760 mMax altitude for the day14.7 kmRoute distanceBreakfast, lunch and dinnerIncluded meals

Day 9

Khoburse to Urdukas

Today's trek is shorter than the previous day's. Urdukas camp sits above the glacier, offering views of the Karakoram's granite peaks in clear weather. There is more time to rest and enjoy the mountains. Even a short distance at altitude calls for an unhurried pace. Travel time: 4–5 hours.

Day 9Route dayUrdukas tent campAccommodation type4000 mMax altitude for the day6.2 kmRoute distanceBreakfast, lunch and dinnerIncluded meals

Day 10

Urdukas to Goro II

We continue deeper into the Baltoro, crossing moraines and glacial terrain. With good visibility, we can see Masherbrum and Muztagh Tower. It will be another long day, so we conserve energy from the morning onward. Tonight, we sleep on the glacier at Goro II camp. Travel time: 7–8 hours.

We reach Concordia, the main focal point of our journey. Broad Peak, Mitre Peak and the peaks of the Gasherbrum massif rise around the camp; K2 comes into view in clear weather. Travel time: approximately 4–6 hours.

Day 12

Day 13

Broad Peak Base Camp to K2 Base Camp and Concordia

From Broad Peak Base Camp, we walk to K2 Base Camp at approximately 5,000–5,150 m. The exact altitude depends on the camp's location. This is one of the program's main outings: we approach the foot of the mountain we have been walking toward throughout the preceding days. If conditions are suitable and the guide agrees, we may visit the Gilkey Memorial. After the outing, we return to Concordia. Travel time: 8–10 hours. The actual distance and time depend on glacier conditions, camp locations and stops.

Day 14

Full rest day at Concordia

A full rest day at Concordia after the outing to K2 Base Camp. We remain at camp, regain our strength and prepare for the trek to Ali Camp. There are no mandatory treks today.

Day 15

Concordia to Ali Camp

We leave Concordia for the Vigne Glacier and Ali Camp. At camp, we prepare our equipment and discuss how we will move on the pass. We will spend the following day at Ali Camp; it is set aside as a reserve and rest day. Travel time: 5–7 hours.

Day 16Route dayAli Camp tent campAccommodation type5000 mMax altitude for the dayBreakfast, lunch and dinnerIncluded meals

Day 17

Ali Camp to Gondogoro La and Khuspang

The nighttime departure for Gondogoro La begins the most demanding day of the program. On the ascent, we cross snow and ice sections using the necessary equipment and protection under the guides' supervision. The descent toward Hushe includes steep rocky sections and loose scree with a risk of rockfall. Fixed ropes are used on technical sections; depending on conditions, it may be necessary to descend on a rope using a descender. An early start and the presence of ropes do not eliminate mountain risks. The crossing is possible only in suitable conditions. If the pass cannot be crossed, we return along our outward route via the Baltoro Glacier. This alternative return is included in the program price at no extra charge. From the pass, we may see K2, Broad Peak, Gasherbrum I and II; Laila Peak can be seen on the descent toward Khuspang. It is especially important to preserve concentration and energy for the descent: reaching the highest point does not mean the day is over. Travel time: 9–12 hours. Maximum altitude: approximately 5,585–5,600 m.

Day 17Route dayKhuspang tent camp, approximately 4,600–4,700 mAccommodation type8 kmRoute distanceBreakfast, lunch and dinnerIncluded meals

Day 18

Khuspang to Saicho

We continue descending along the Gondogoro Valley and Glacier toward Saicho. Rock and ice gradually give way to patches of vegetation. After the high-altitude camps, this feels like a new chapter of the journey. It remains a long day: we do not let our concentration slip simply because the pass is behind us. Travel time: 6–10 hours.

Day 18Route daySaicho tent campAccommodation type3350 mMax altitude for the day18 kmRoute distanceBreakfast, lunch and dinnerIncluded meals

Day 19

Saicho to Hushe

The final walking stage leads to Hushe. Here, we can look back on the route without thinking about the next high camp. We stay in Hushe overnight. Travel time: approximately 3–5 hours.

Day 19Route dayTent camp in HusheAccommodation type3000 mMax altitude for the day7.2 kmRoute distanceBreakfast, lunch and dinnerIncluded meals

Day 20

Drive from Hushe to Skardu

We return to Skardu by 4WD. After the camping portion of the program, a hotel, shower, unpacking and rest await. In the evening, there will be time to talk about the journey at leisure, without checking the plan for another mountain trek the next day. Travel time: approximately 5 hours, depending on road conditions.

Day 20Route day4-star hotel in SkarduAccommodation type2230 mMax altitude for the dayBreakfastIncluded meals

Day 21

Reserve day in Skardu

The first of two reserve days after returning to Skardu. If needed, these days may be used earlier during the trek to wait for better weather or allow additional rest. In that case, the dates of subsequent stages shift, and the remaining reserve in Skardu is reduced. The guide makes this decision based on conditions and the group's well-being. If the reserve day is spent on the trek, camping, meals and support services are included in the program price. If we stay in Skardu, hotel accommodation costs extra.

Day 21Route day4-star hotel in Skardu at extra cost, or a tent camp on the trekAccommodation typeBreakfast at the hotel; breakfast, lunch and dinner on the trekIncluded meals

Day 22

Reserve day in Skardu

The second reserve day. If it has not been used on the trek, we spend it in Skardu before returning to Islamabad. Hotel accommodation on this day costs extra; if the day is used on the trek, camping, meals and support services are included. Optional trip to Deosai National Park This is a vast expanse of alpine plains at approximately 3,500–4,100 meters, surrounded by mountain ranges. In summer, the plateau is covered in flowers, icy rivers flow through green meadows, and high-altitude lakes reflect the sky and snow-covered peaks. If both reserve days remain free, an optional trip to Deosai National Park is possible. The drive from Skardu takes approximately 4–5 hours. We sleep in tents and return to Skardu the following day. The trip is subject to agreement with the guide, taking the weather and return schedule to Islamabad into account. Duration: 2 days, 1 night. Price: an additional 150 USD per person; not included in the main program price.

Day 22Route day4-star hotel in Skardu at extra cost, or a tent camp on the trekAccommodation typeBreakfast at the hotel; breakfast, lunch and dinner on the trekIncluded meals

Day 23

Return from Skardu to Islamabad

After the reserve days, we fly from Skardu to Islamabad and transfer to the hotel. The guide may adjust the return schedule based on the weather and transport situation. If the flight is canceled, we return by road at no extra charge. If the reserve days have already been used, a flight delay or overland transfer may affect the international departure: returning in time for the originally booked flight is not guaranteed.

Day 23Route day5-star hotel in IslamabadAccommodation typeBreakfastIncluded meals

Day 24

Departure for home

Transfer to the airport and fly home. The journey ends, but you will surely want to revisit these weeks in your memories: your first steps on the Baltoro, the morning light over Concordia and the days spent among great mountains. Recommended departure times and the group transfer schedule will be confirmed. Distances, altitudes and trekking times are approximate. They may change depending on camp locations, glacier conditions, weather and the group's pace. The guide may adjust the route and schedule based on conditions and participants' well-being. Safety takes priority over following the original plan.

Frequently asked questions

Is this a trek or a climb of K2?
  • This is a trek to K2 Base Camp with a crossing of Gondogoro La, not a climb to the summit of K2. The pass has technical sections requiring mountaineering equipment and appropriate preparation.
Do I need experience, and who is this program suitable for?
  • You will need good endurance, experience of multi-day mountain treks and a willingness to stay in tents. The pass requires preparation for using crampons and fixed ropes, including ascending with an ascender and making a controlled descent on a rope. Discuss your experience and preparation with the program guide.
How should I prepare physically?
  • Prepare for sustained exertion over several days: long walks with a daypack, ascents and descents. Overall endurance and legs conditioned for this kind of effort are important. Train regularly, rather than only just before departure.
Can I rent equipment?
  • Yes, equipment can be rented in Skardu, but it is better to have your own. Before departure, check the condition of your equipment and confirm with the guide that your technical equipment is compatible.
What are the accommodation conditions?
  • In Islamabad, we stay in a 5-star hotel with comfortable rooms, a restaurant and a terrace. In Skardu, we stay in a 4-star hotel. City accommodation is twin-share. On the trek, we sleep two people to a tent; sleeping mats for the tents are provided. You may bring your own mat if you wish. This is an expedition route without nightly stays in lodges. The camp equipment includes a shower tent, but a shower may not be available at every high-altitude camp. If reserve days are spent in hotels, accommodation on those days costs extra. You can choose single accommodation: a private room in all the hotels in Islamabad and Skardu on the itinerary costs an additional 400 USD per person, and a private tent for the entire trek costs 300 USD per person. These supplements cover the whole program, not each night. Let the manager know in advance if you would like to stay on your own.
What about meals and drinking water?
  • Breakfast, lunch and dinner are included on the trek. In hotels in Islamabad and Skardu, only breakfast is included; lunches and dinners in these cities are not included. Meals and support services on the scheduled rest and reserve days on the trek, including at Concordia and Ali Camp, are also included. A kitchen operates on the route, and drinking water is boiled. Tell the manager about any food allergies in advance, before the trip. You may bring a water filter.
How are the rest and reserve days arranged?
  • Day 7 is for rest and acclimatization at Paiyu. Day 14 is a full rest day at Concordia after the outing to K2. Day 16 is a reserve and rest day at Ali Camp before Gondogoro La. Days 21–22 are reserve days after returning to Skardu; if needed, they may be used earlier during the trek. In that case, the dates of subsequent stages shift, and the remaining reserve in Skardu is reduced. If reserve days are spent on the trek, camping, meals and support services are included. If they are spent in hotels, accommodation costs extra. If both days remain unused, an optional trip to Deosai is possible. Day 23 is the return to Islamabad, and Day 24 is the departure for home.
What is planned for the rest day at Concordia?
  • Day 14 is devoted entirely to rest at camp after the outing to K2 Base Camp. No mandatory treks or out-and-back excursions are scheduled that day. The following day, the itinerary takes us to Ali Camp.
What will the weather be like?
  • Cold, strong winds, precipitation and sudden changes in weather are possible in the mountains. Even reserve days do not guarantee clear views of K2. But that is precisely why we have added reserve days!
Is the crossing of Gondogoro La guaranteed?
  • No. The guide makes the decision based on the weather, route conditions, the group's well-being and the risk of rockfall on the descent. A reserve day allows time to wait, but does not eliminate the hazards of the pass. If a safe crossing is not possible, we return along the outward route via the Baltoro Glacier. This return, including team support, meals, overnight accommodation and necessary transfers, is included in the program price at no extra charge.
How heavy will my pack be?
  • Porters carry the main luggage. Transport of up to 16 kg of personal luggage per participant is included in the price. You can have more carried: each kilogram above the allowance costs 12 USD for the entire trek, not per day. You walk with a daypack containing what you will need before reaching the next camp.
Will there be communications and a way to charge devices?
  • Mobile coverage is virtually nonexistent on most of the trek. You can buy a local SIM card in Skardu for connectivity at Concordia. Our team guide will carry an inReach satellite tracker. You will be able to charge devices every day: a generator will operate in the camps. Charging is included in the program price. Bring charging cables, a power bank and spare batteries or rechargeable batteries for your headlamp.
What insurance do I need?
  • You will need a policy suitable for this route, covering an altitude of approximately 5,600 m, a technical pass and the use of mountaineering equipment. Check that search and rescue operations and helicopter evacuation are covered.
Do I need a visa and permits?
  • The visa and trekking permit are arranged separately. To prepare the documents, you provide the personal information needed for the invitation and trekking permit. Our partner in Pakistan prepares these documents and sends them to you. Once you receive the invitation and permit, you complete the visa application yourself on the designated website and attach the documents provided. We will provide the website link and application guidance. The trekking permit and visa support are included in the program price; visa fees, if applicable to your nationality, are payable separately. The official visa processing time is 40 days. A few additional days are needed to prepare the invitation and trekking permit. You must sign up for the program and submit the information needed for the documents no later than 50 days before the start. This is the final deadline; we recommend planning your participation well in advance.
How do booking, payment and cancellations work?

Start by submitting an application and waiting for approval from your trip manager. Pay the deposit within 5 days (120 hours) after your application is approved by the manager, and no later than the programme start. The exact deadline is shown on your trip status page. Your place is secured once we receive it.

The deposit forms part of the total trip price. The deposit pays for consultations, booking services with partners and organising the trip, so it is non-refundable if you choose to cancel your participation.

The remaining balance for your selected departure must be paid no later than May 4, 2027 at 12:00 AM (Astana).

If the deposit is received after the usual balance deadline, the balance is due by the end of the 10th working day in the Astana calendar following the deposit, capped at the programme start. The exact deadline is shown on your trip status page.

If your plans change, notify your trip manager that you wish to cancel. If you have already paid the remaining balance for the programme:

  • If the Company receives your cancellation notice at least 60 calendar days before the programme starts, the remaining balance paid is refunded in full.
  • If your cancellation notice is received fewer than 60 calendar days before the programme starts, actual, documented expenses incurred in preparing your trip and not covered by the deposit may be deducted from the remaining balance paid. If there are no such expenses, the remaining balance paid is refunded in full.

Amounts returned or due to be returned by partners are excluded from the calculation of deducted expenses. The Company’s fee is included in the retained deposit and is not deducted again.

Your trip manager checks the documents and confirms the refund calculation. If cancellation results from the Company’s breach of its obligations, the amount paid, including the deposit, is refunded in full. Refunds are paid within 5 working days in the Astana calendar from the date the grounds for the refund arise, without waiting for funds from the partner.

For full details, see Booking and Payment.
